All Dell Laptops will be LED backlit by 2010

Written by admin on Sunday, September 28th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

In another pro-environmental move by Dell, and they’ve already started, but all Dell laptop displays will switch to LED (light-emitting diodes) backlights by 2010.

This will eliminate mercury in the displays, and will reduce energy usage in the laptops by as much as 40+%. In a double-benefit, LED displays also extend battery life; it could be as much as double in some cases.

But wait, there’s more - the laptops will get thinner because LED panels are thinner.

Sweet!

Megapixel race hits the mobile realm

Megapixel race hits the mobile realm
by Darren Murph, posted Sep 28th 2008 at 8:27AM When the megapixel race unofficially started in the point-and-shoot world, it didn’t take long before every last camera manufacturer out there was cramming 14-megapixel sensors into any ole pocket cam. Now, it seems the same race is headed to the mobile realm. Of late, we’ve seen a new batch of 8-megapixel handsets and a 9-megapixel sensor, and a recent interview with LG’s sales and marketing director John Barton points to even more of those in the near future. According to him, “the megapixel race that we saw amongst camera makers is now being battled out between mobile manufacturers,” hinting that 10+ megapixel phones (not to mention handsets with HD video capability) are closer than we may have imagined. Speaker Buddies look like terrified little children

Speaker Buddies look like terrified little children
If your speakers are looking a little too normal lately you might check out this design.  These are still just a design and not quite to the point that they will be retailed just yet.  The strange little speakers look about like a terrified child curled up in the corner.  Like perhaps one that was just traumatized by whatever it is that you happen to do in your house when no one is looking.  The speakers were designed by Alex Underwood, who decided to take an odd direction with the materials for the speakers. iPhone gets tweaked Safari in firmware 2.2

iPhone gets tweaked Safari in firmware 2.2
by Chris Ziegler, posted Sep 27th 2008 at 9:55PM We’re going down our “things that absolutely must change on the iphone” list, and yeah, “redo the Safari toolbar” isn’t anywhere on there. Not even at the very bottom. Cupertino works in mysterious ways, though, and they’ve decided in firmware 2.2 that it’s time to muck with the positioning of the text boxes so that the address bar and search bar both appear at all times without needing to first tap in the area. They’ve also moved the refresh button inside the address bar itself, which should truly revolutionize our browsing experience yet again. Apple, screw copy / paste — we’re officially stoked.[Via Wired, thanks Konstantin]Read PermalinkEmail this134 CommentsFiled under: cellphones, HandheldsTags (Read the full post about ‘iPhone gets tweaked Safari in firmware 2.2′…)

T-Mobile G1 pre-orders sell out (update: not quite yet)

T-Mobile G1 pre-orders sell out (update: not quite yet)
by Chris Ziegler, posted Sep 27th 2008 at 2:57PM If you’re a T-Mobile customer who’s been dozing off for the past few days, you’ve already missed your chance to pre-order yourself a G1. With any luck, that won’t be a problem and you’ll just be able to march into a store on or around October 22 and pick one up the old-fashioned way, but the window of opportunity for an utterly stress-free Android buying experience is closed. We don’t have hard numbers on just how many units were being offered through the pre-order program, but 60,000 is getting tossed around as a rumor, which would work out to about 10 percent of the total outlay HTC is said to be aiming for by year’s end. Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D System

Written by admin on Sunday, September 28th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D System
The Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D System developed by Fujifilm (who else) allows the naked eye to view 3D images in well, 3D glory, without the need for any pesky glasses. These 3D images will definitely go a long way in changing the landscape where digital cameras, digital photo frames as well as photo printing services are concerned. Fujifilm hopes to commercialize the system by next year with its new 3D system that relies on a 3D image shooting method known as “double-lens type”, using a couple of lenses to do so. The 3D images are then displayed using a LCD panel endowed with “Light Direction Control System”, a technology that controls the light’s direction. Einstein’s eco-friendly refrigerator concept dusted off, put to good use
by Darren Murph, posted Sep 27th 2008 at 12:05PMGiven how large the green bandwagon has become, it’s no real shock to see an energy-saving concept from the 1930s being exhumed and investigated further. Scientists at Oxford University have begun to take a closer look at an early invention from the great Albert Einstein in order to hopefully create refrigerators (and appliances in general) that could be used completely without electricity. Back in the day, Sir Albert created a mechanism that had no moving parts and used only pressurized gases to keep things chilly. Once compressors became more efficient in the 50s, however, the idea was tossed aside. (Read the full post about ‘Einstein’s eco-friendly refrigerator concept dusted off, put to good use’…)
