Google’s First Steps
Photo credit:William Mercer McLeod By Karsten Lemm On a day in late August, 1998, two Stanford Phd. students managed to make $100,000 with a few mouse clicks by showing their new search technology to Cisco co-founder Andy von Bechtolsheim. The seasoned Silicon Valley executive was so taken with what he saw that he dashed to his Porsche, pulled his check book from the glove compartment and wrote check number 4642 in the name of a company that did not yet exist: Google, Inc. The two students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, officially founded their start-up on September 7, 1998. Ten years later, the little search engine that could has become one of the most prominent players on the Internet, dominating its industry like few other companies anywhere. Solar Powered Bonsai Tree Can Charge Your iPod and Mobile Phone
Recharge your cellphone, ipod, iphone and camera with this USB solar powered bonsai tree by French designer Vivien Muller. Thanks to 54 tiny photovoltaic panels, the iBonsai (we just made that name up) will store energy in a hidden battery during the day, allowing you to recharge your gadgets even at night. Hate wire clutter? Who doesn’t. The bonsai charging tree cleverly hides all wires and plugs under the tray. Need to slim down the tree’s berth so you can fit it on your desk? No problem. You can rotate each part individually and produce an endless number of different shapes. It’s like metal adult LEGOS. The iBonsai Tree is decorative, good for the environment and sexy. Scientists get death threats over Large Hadron Collider
by Darren Murph, posted Sep 7th 2008 at 7:37AM Really people, enough is enough. Death threats? Seriously? According to a fresh report from the Telegraph, gurus working on the mysterious Large Hadron Collider are receiving all sorts of strange messages, e-mails and faxes as the go-live date (this Wednesday, supposedly) draws ever closer. For those curious about why some folks are up in arms over this thing, we’ll simply point you to this very informational rap video; for those opposed to nerdy hip-hop, let’s just say its primary goal is to “seek out new particles including the long-awaited Higgs boson responsible for making things weigh what they do and the possible source of gravity called dark matter.” Somehow or another, the paranoid among us think that carrying out those tasks will rip the world wide open or leave you stuck in 1990 with nothing in your CD player but Ice Ice Baby.
