Texas Instruments wants to prove that less is indeed more
Imagine being able to power your smoke alarm in your house without ever needing to change your batteries. It would get it’s energy simply from the energy and vibrations from everything around it. That is the goal of Texas Instruments. They call it “energy scavenging”, and they say the reality is not that far away. Employing the inventor of the original microchip Jack Kilby, Texas Instruments, currently the world’s third largest chip maker, is busy trying to break another electronic frontier.  This time by creating a chip that uses an infinitesimally small amount of energy to operate.  They actually did a demonstration showing a clock being run on…get this…grapes. Will the Kindle be the new favorite format for textbooks?

Written by admin on Monday, August 25th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

When Amazon released their Kindle e-book reader, they knew they were taking a big step. The device (and its $399 price tag) had the power to make or break the internet giant’s e-book program. A price cut and less than a year later, it looks like they might be poised to shake up the market yet again.

While there have been rumors of new Kindles for a while now, those rumors have now begun to take a more specific shape. According to McAdams Wright Ragen analyst Tim Bueneman, there are a few new models that Amazon is considering, but there’s one in particular that may be of great interest to the all-powerful student market.

Written by admin on Monday, August 25th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

Do you think that the iPhone 3G’s problems are Apple’s fault? Or should the blame fall to the carriers? We’ve heard evidence for each case, but aside from some talk about a bad chipset we are still left speculating. Wired.com took it upon themselves to do an iPhone 3G owner survey to see just how well 3G performance was measuring up.

The survey was open to all iphone 3G owners and it measured upload and download speeds for both 3G and EDGE.

Yang Ying digital camera is inspired by oriental wisdom
Though genuine photography enthusiasts would not touch the Yang Ying digital camera with a barge pole, it presents a design of considerable interest to gadget-buffs like me who are on the eternal look-out for unusual designs. The Yang Ying camera conceptualized by Polish designer Kubasek Krzysztof, is shaped like - well, the hugely popular Yin and Yang symbols from Chinese philosophy. As far as the looks are concerned, we have to slot this device in the eye-catcher category as it has no take-away from a traditional camera. The camera is separable into two “tear-drops”, one of which holds the LCD preview screen and the other holds the flash memory which can directly be connected to your PC’s USB port.
