Apple Plugs Hole in the iPhone Store Sorting

Apple Plugs Hole in the iPhone Store Sorting
In case you have missed it, in last week’s iphone Apps Store launch fog-of-war, some developers found that adding an invisible character (the good old alt+255?) at the beginning of their application name would get them on top of the alphabetically-sorted list. That was a Rookie mistake from Apple that has been fixed now, as Apple is probably checking and removing such invisible characters. Now the only way to get you application’s name on top is to give it a name starting with “AAA”. (Read the full post about ‘Apple Plugs Hole in the iPhone Store Sorting’…)

Fujifilm’s Camera is a Social Networking and Marketing Device
Fujifilm’s new digital camera sounds pretty cool, but we could do without the social network / marketing campaign that’s attached to it. Fujifilm on Thursday launched ZSpotNow.com, a site constructed using the social networking tool Ning. ZSpotNow is ostensibly a community for owners of the Fujifilm FinePix Z20 digital camera, but Fujifilm is using it to promote a series of events, which the company says are inspired by the Z20’s features. The events include a pro skating competition, a Z20-logo designing contest, and a video-making contest asking members to record clips of themselves speaking about trends in fashion and technology. USB Fidgets in Three Flavors

USB Fidgets in Three Flavors
Do you happen to have a bad habit of fidgeting around at your desk whenever you’re bored in the office? Well, instead of twirling pens and drumming your fingers on the table much to the annoyance of your cubicle mates, why not pick up any of these three USB fidgets from Brando? They come in basketball, golf and soccer models, each retailing for $14. Of course, pressing (tapping, more likely) the ball in question will help it bounce back to the other end of the screen from where the ball came from. A great way to test those reflexes, but do play this with your computer muted unless you want to get a warning letter from the management for not being dedicated enough at work. Flying Chute Car may be green, but it’s also suicidal

Flying Chute Car may be green, but it’s also suicidal
Have you seen those crazy parachute planes that combine a propeller driven engine with a chute and allows bored weekend warriors to kill themselves without a pilot’s license? Well, now there’s a company taking the next “logical” step by creating a flying dune buggy that does the same thing - kill a reckless driver and anyone else who is unfortunate enough to be on the groud when this 2500 pound rock drops on their heads. The specs on this supposed green death trap are as follows: it powered by a biodiesel-modified motorcycle engine, has a take-off distance of less than 200 meters and a top speed of almost 70MPH. Breaking: Gmail goes offline?

Breaking: Gmail goes offline?
For what seems like years, users have asked for gmail to be accessible offline and Google is finally going to acquiesce to their demands.  Coming in approx 6 months, both Gmail and Calendar will offer you the chance to move offline.  Early testers saw a dialogue box allowing them to save 3 months of appointments locally. Allowing these advances is something called Google Gears which exists to facilitate a smooth transition between online and offline realms.  We’ve expected good things from Google Gears for a while now, but it is good to see some progress later rather than never. This news comes from Andrew Fogg’s twitter (where I get all my news) and he warns that it may be just for enterprise users; he is not sure but did see a demo. Nokia to keep their touchscreen phones mid-market

Written by admin on Thursday, July 17th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

Who would have thought? Apparently, people really want touchscreen phones. So much so that it seems like every company out there is working on one, or already has one on the market. Nokia is no different, of course. Though they may be late to the game, at least they have their plans worked out, and they know exactly what phone they’re making and who they’re making it for. Via a press release from the company today, head of devices, Kai Oistamo, stated that their line of touchscreen phones will start rolling out in the second half of this year.

Nokia has also decided to keep their touchscreen phones simple.

Force Unleashed coming to the iPhone

Written by admin on Thursday, July 17th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

Force Unleashed coming to the iPhone
At E3, our friends at Crunchgear saw a really cool app for the iphone - the latest LucasArts and THQ Wireless’ mega blockbuster video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, has been ported to it. It looks to be really seamless and LucasArts has gotten around the iPhone’s sole multi-touch interface rather nicely. Players can’t use the accelerometer for anything other than changing from portrait to landscape, but users can actually control the Sith apprentice by running their finger in a manner suggested by the game in order to create the needed moves. An upside down sort of “plus sign” (where you keep your finger on the screen) will signal the apprentice to force choke the bad guys, then swapping from one side of the screen to the other will tell him where to toss his victims like rag dolls.
