The Go Anywhere Backpack fits in your palm

The Go Anywhere Backpack fits in your palm
Sure, normal backpacks are all well and good for students, but what about us sporadic world trekkers who only need to whip out a backpack when we go traveling? We certainly don’t need a big old sack sitting around, taking up even more of our home’s storage, which admittedly, we can’t sacrifice. We’re becoming decidedly cramped up in here. That’s why the Go Anywhere Backpack is so cool. When you’re not using it, it literally folds into a pocket sized bulge. While it might be a little too large to actually fit in your pocket without looking like you have some kind of abnormal growth, it’s certainly a whole ton more compact than a normal backpack. New screenshots, music direction for Mushroom Men on Wii

New screenshots, music direction for Mushroom Men on Wii
With Metal Gear Solid 4 for the playstation 3, and just about every game to come out for the Xbox 360, you might feel like the depth of gameplay on the Wii has been a bit on the light side since its introduction. Complaints aren’t completely unfounded, either. The Wii is severely lacking in RPGs of any sort, or any fun, competitive platformers (with the exception of Super Mario Galaxy and No More Heroes. Still, the console continues to outsell the competition and part of that is based on expectations of games to come. One game that has a lot of people curious is Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars. The game is being produced by Red Fly Studio and began as some incredible concept art, that has seemingly formed into a beautiful, dramatic game. Vauxhall Motors Speed Limit Detector

Vauxhall Motors Speed Limit Detector
A few months ago, I got pulled over for speeding on the highway. The officer told me that the speed limit was 45 mph, but I could have sworn it was 55, maybe even 65. Of course, the officer was not about to let me go back and check, and as it turned out, I think I had just missed the 45 mph speed limit sign. Needless to say, I settled the ticket out of court, but it would have been nice to have some device on my dashboard that tells me what the speed limit is. Granted, that might condemn me on my next ticket. It would be hard to convince an officer that I didn’t know what the speed limit was when it’s glowing on my dashboard. However, if that number is less than what the officer says the speed limit is, I would be so vindicated! (Read the full post about ‘Vauxhall Motors Speed Limit Detector’…)

Sony to work on FEDs

Sony to work on FEDs
Sony’s OLED TV release is barely a year old and the Japanese firm is already looking even further into the future with a next generation display known as FEDs (Field Emission Displays). These will roll out at the end of 2009, and will target both medical and broadcasting industries with the possibility of 60″ consumer TVs to follow thereafter. According to Sony, FEDs are more energy efficient and sharper than LCDs, and they’re much easier to develop in large sizes, making them a viable alternative to OLEDs. No mention of pricing though, so I guess this will require you to dig deep when available. (Read the full post about ‘Sony to work on FEDs’…)

Ricoh erecting 47 x 126-foot solar and wind-powered billboard in Times Square
by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted Jul 3rd 2008 at 1:28PM Ever walk through Times Square and wonder how much electricity all those flashy billboards are soaking up? No? Well, Ricoh has, and now they’re doing something about it. Ricoh Company Ltd. of Tokyo is erecting a 47 x 126-foot billboard at Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street that will be completely powered by the sun and wind. Fueled by 45 solar panels and four wind turbines, the billboard won’t even need a backup electric generator. On days that the sun and wind aren’t enough to power it, it will simply go dark. In the end, the billboard is said to reduce carbon dioxide usage by 18 tons a year. (Read the full post about ‘Ricoh erecting 47 x 126-foot solar and wind-powered billboard in Times Square’…)

Openmoko Neo FreeRunner on Sale July 4
July 4, 2008 isn’t just our nation’s 232nd b-day — it’s also the day the highly anticipated Openmoko Neo FreeRunner cellphone will be available to anyone who wants to take a gander at the latest attempt to take the open Linux platform mainstream. Will it work? If you gently take your eyes to a few discussion forums around the FOSS community, you’ll witness overall controlled excitement — after all, they get to play with some real hardware that’s designed just for them (and will keep them from thinking about Google’s open Android OS for a few days -– BTW, where is that first build already? Jeez). But we can understand the anticipation for the FreeRunner — the openness of the unit really beckons. (Read the full post about ‘Openmoko Neo FreeRunner on Sale July 4′…)

Scientists create sea-power generating ‘Anaconda’

Scientists create sea-power generating ‘Anaconda’
by Joshua Topolsky, posted Jul 3rd 2008 at 2:29PM Scientists may have discovered a new way to combat the global energy crisis — and they’re calling it the “Anaconda” (we’ll give you a moment to purge your mind of any J. Lo films). The system works by utilizing the power of the ocean and long, black rubber tubes (hence the name). The rubber “snakes” are laid just below the sea’s surface where they’re pounded by the ocean’s waves. That movement creates “bulge waves” inside the water-filled tubes, which are then carried up through the devices to a turbine, which in turn sends the energy it produces to shore via cables. USB Animal Massager

USB Animal Massager
USB devices and gadgets can be pretty silly at times, and the USB Animal Massager is one of them. This one retails for $10 and will come in a dog, panda or pig form to help relieve you of aches and pains at your feet and back. Since it requires a USB port to power it, you can take five from your work while looking silly (albeit getting some much needed relief). Would make for a pretty nice welcome gift for anyone joining the organization before they realize what backbreaking work is in store. Tesla wants more than Roadster

Tesla wants more than Roadster
Tesla Motors isn’t going to rest on their laurels with the Tesla Roadster as the company has big plans to roll out a 4-door, 5-passenger sedan in the near future. Dubbed the Model S, this will be the second vehicle to the company’s stable of full-electric cars, and production will commence in late 2010 onwards. It will retail for approximately $60,000 and will be able to run for 225 miles before another charge is required. Good to see such green initiatives taking place, and hopefully the price will drop in the forseeable future.
