AMD introduces Puma notebook platform

Written by admin on June 4th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

Today at Computex AMD launched Puma, their “next generation mobile platform” designed to bring performance and efficiency to AMD-powered notebooks. The platform is not really so much a new technology as it is the combination of a few components. Specifically Puma will use:

  •  AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processor
  • ATI Radeon HD 3000 Series Graphics
  • Mobile 7-series chipset, like AMD M780G, with hybrid graphics
  • 802.11n WiFi

This platform move is very similar to AMD’s 780G release, though it will probably gain more traction in the notebook market than it has on the desktop. The platform looks to pack a decent amount of power and with hybrid video and HD 3000 series graphics it should provide mainstream buyers with a good foundation for basic gaming and HD video watching. The platform attempts to combine a reasonable battery life with improved wireless performance and decent graphics power without increasing the price too much. With Intel’s Centrino 2 experiencing problems AMD might be able to step in and grab part of the mainstream market, but Puma should have a limited impact on ultraportable systems where Intel will retain its lead.

So even while the Turion X2 Ultra Puma is not expected to be able to beat Intel’s products on a processor-by-processor basis, the overall platform is what AMD is focused on. With Puma launching on over 100 products and offering anywhere from good to excellent graphics performance it should be very interesting to see if AMD can take in some market share in the next few months.

Puma was not the only news from AMD today. The company also announced its high performance ATI Radeon HD 3800 mobile graphics chip and ATI’s XPG (eXternal Graphics Platform) which should deliver high performance, upgradeable graphics to compatible notebooks using an external device.
