Dell’s XPS systems resurrected, WSJ is Judas
by Thomas Ricker, posted May 14th 2008 at 7:32AM Oops, looks like the Wall Street Journal was getting a bit of ahead of itself calling for the end of Dell’s XPS lineup. While Dell will definitely “invest like crazy” in its Alienware brand, XPS systems and indeed, XPS gaming systems “will remain an important part of our gaming product portfolio.” There won’t be an early phase-out of the XPS brand as reported by the WSJ. So there you have it, Dell XPS, resurrected after just one day in the tomb. Michael Dell truly is a savior. (Read the full post about ‘Dell’s XPS systems resurrected, WSJ is Judas’…)

Mosquito Proof Jacket

Written by admin on Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

Don’t you just hate those pesky mosquitoes when they seem to appear out of nowhere, especially during the summer? Napapijiri knows all about your aversion in getting bitten by mosquitoes and have developed this so-called Mosquitor Proof Jacket. Apparently this jacket also lets water run off it like wax by being waterproof, and is covered with a coat of “secret concoction of chemicals” that supposedly keeps away those vampiric parasites. The jacket won’t come cheap at approximately $310 though.

The Education Ministry, Electoral Service and military servers used by the Chilean government have been infiltrated by a hacker. The servers contained the personal details of over 6 million Chileans, which has now briefly become publicly available through a forum posting to a technology blog site.

The story was reported by the El Mercurio newspaper, which said the hacker also left a message stating his reasons for the act. His intention was to uncover just how poor the security was on these important servers and show the lack of overall data protection there exists in Chile.

The 6 million records included full addresses, telephone numbers, ID card details and academic records.

U.K. computing undergraduates taught no security skills

Written by admin on Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

New research carried out by the U.K. government has found that under 20% of computing graduates are taught about security in relation to developing software. The other 80% receive no more than 5 hours dedicated to learning about software security in their 3 or 4 year courses.

The research, entitled “The teaching of security issues to computing
undergraduates in England: a cause for
concern?“, has been carried out by the Cyber Security Knowledge Transfer Network (CSKTN) and headed up by independent IT security consultant Bill Whyte.

Greenhouse claims its DH-SSDGD SSD drive is ‘industry’s fastest’
by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted May 13th 2008 at 11:48AMWhen it comes to drives, it’s all about space and speed. That’s why we were happy to see that Greenhouse is boasting that the DH-SSDGS series is the “industry’s fastest” — sure, we can’t verify that claim, but at least they’re trying to get our attention. Regardless, the new drives read at up to 130MB/s with write speeds of 67MB/s, with capacities that range from 16GB up to 128GB. Drive size is a standard 2.5-inches, with a 9.5mm height. Dell to discontinue XPS desktop range? Updated

Written by admin on Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

An article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday has suggested Dell might be about to cease making high-performance desktop games machines sold through its XPS branding.

The reason for the decision is apparently so it can focus on the Alienware branded machines, a company Dell acquired back in March 2006. It is thought the XPS desktop range may be hurting sales of Alienware machines and therefore one of them had to go.

With no official confirmation of the decision there is very little to go on, but it may be as little as four XPS machines are discontinued alongside a refresh of the Alienware range.

Dell has recently released the XPS 630 and XPS 730 ranges.

iPhone 3G Settings [pic]

iPhone 3G Settings [pic]
Still doubt that the 3G iPhone is coming soon? This settings screen with a 3G toggle switch (see image below) was found in the latest beta release of the iPhone’s 2.0 firmware. Why would you want to turn off 3G? Because 3G drains cell phone batteries very quickly. In this screenshot, Apple has included a toggle setting to turn 3G off, and use AT&T’s slower but more battery friendly EDGE network instead. Probably a very useful feature if you are almost out of juice. When can we expect to see a 3G iphone and how much will it cost? (Read the full post about ‘iPhone 3G Settings [pic]’…)
