Redesigned 3G iPhone Coated in Shiny Black Plastic?

Written by admin on Monday, April 7th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

It seems only fitting that after two weeks of feverish 3G iPhone rumor mongering there would finally emerge a photo of this mythical device. This one was fed to the ipod Observer, and if there’s any merit to it, your 3G iphone will be a shiny black little number, with a rear end clad in glossy black plastic instead of aluminum.

Based on the photo, the phone also appears to do away with the separate black plastic end piece that covers the antenna. Personally, I have to say it also looks suspiciously similar to Knight Creations’ customized TiAlN (Titanium Nitride/Titanium Aluminum Nitride) iPhones.

How to Catch a Netflix Thief

Written by admin on Monday, April 7th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

The title says it all. Brian Krische and his roommate grew suspicious after far too many of their Netflix movies disappeared in the mail. So like any true nerds, they cooked up a hi-tech mousetrap. Krische hooked a camcorder up to his MacBook, installed some motion detecting security camera software and pointed the whole lot at the mailboxes.

Later that very day, their suspicion “that it was the white-trash tenants in the first floor” was proved true. The upstairs neighbor loitered around their mailbox and then disappeared with the red Netflix mailer. The guys called Netflix, who were ‘very understanding”. They also called the police, who busted the perp tried him. The sentence?

AbleComm Plays April Fool Gag Two Days Late

Written by admin on Monday, April 7th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

What day is April Fool’s Day? That’s right, April 1st. It appears that somebody either forgot to tell that to the folks at AbleComm, or they were suffering from such stunning inefficiency that the gag came out two days late, on April 3rd. Friday’s story about Panasonic’s cellphone plasma screens, in which AbleComm played small manufacturing role, was a fake.

The press release was dated April 3rd, and many blogs and news sites went with the story. It turns out that the mistimed press release caused such a fuss that a new release was released, as it were, and personal emails sent, like the one I got from PR Newswire’s Michael Toole:

Hi Charlie.

CulinaryPrep Mixer Preys On Food Health Fears

Written by admin on Monday, April 7th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

CulinaryPrep Mixer Preys On Food Health Fears
The CulinaryPrep is a speed marination device which justifies its high price with food safety claims. The gadget is essentially a tumbler for food, into which you drop raw meat, fish or vegetables along with a “specially formulated” solution which, going on a promotional spot for CBS News and a well buried FAQ answer, appears to be little more than salt, citric acid and optional flavoring. Of course, $400 for a marinator is steep, even if it does pump out air and do its business in a vacuum (more on that in a moment). So we also have health claims. The makers maintain that the CulinaryPrep eliminates up to 99.5% of food-borne bacteria, and reduces free radicals, sodium and fat. LG Launches New Black Label

Written by admin on Monday, April 7th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

The only Black Label that I truly love is that of the alcoholic variety, but LG has just rolled out its Black Label series which makes for a worthy successor after the LG Chocolate and Shine. I do know that it comes with a 5 megapixel camera, and touts itself to be the slimmest of its kind in the world, which means it must be no thicker than the 14.9mm found on the Samsung G600. I have a feeling that one of these days, cell phone will be so fragile that they break in half when you sit on them. The LG Black Label also has carbon fibre and tempered glass styling to add to its class.

Pen Fishing Rod

Pen Fishing Rod

Ever took a stroll along the banks of a river, only to catch a glimpse of a pretty large fish making its way through the murky depths? Why, the fishing bug within you is stirred and you mutter your frustrations under your breath that you did not bring all your fishing equipment with you. The Pen Fishing Rod aims to alleviate this guilt, allowing you to have a go at impromptu fishing. Ok, this clever little gadget is about the size of a large marker pen at only eight inches long, and yet opens up to become an aluminium alloy 4ft fishing rod, complete with a left and right handed reel (packed separately), a 5lb breaking strain line, and even includes a triple hook spinner. Plastica makes a thermos for food (at last!)

Plastica makes a thermos for food (at last!)
Is the plural of thermos “thermoses” or “thermice”? While you’re pondering that, allow me to introduce you to this fabulous new food thermos from Plastica. The problem with storing soups and stews in a traditional thermos is that the top is never wide enough to pour out a decent portion - leaving your chicken noodles or chunky vegetables languishing uneaten at the bottom of the flask. Plastica’s Thermos Food Jar costs $30 and is made especially to store and pour any kind of hot food. It will keep your stew steaming for 12 hours and chill your gazpacho for 20. Even better, there’s an integrated spoon so you don’t have to gulp your soup out of a cup (I hate that). (Read the full post about ‘Plastica makes a thermos for food (at last!)’…)

Lenovo gets out of mobile handset business

Written by admin on Monday, April 7th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

It’s official–Lenovo is out of the mobile handset business. Many people may not even have known that Lenovo had a handset business (the handsets were sold primarily in China), but PCWorld reported that Lenovo completed the sale of its handset unit on March 31st.

Lenovo’s mobile handset division had been suffering over the last year, which drove the company to consider selling it. According to PCWorld, handset shipments for the mobile unit declined 31 percent in the quarter ending in December of last year. The sale will be reflected in the company’s latest quarter which ended March 31st.

There are just too many handset businesses out there for Lenovo to compete.
