Wii Raincheck, Shoulda Coulda Woulda [Update]

Wii Raincheck, Shoulda Coulda Woulda [Update]
Who would’ve thunk? A month after Christmas, retail-priced Wiis are still pretty much sold out everywhere. And while ours sits in our entertainment center gathering dust, many others still only own Wiis in their hearts, hopes and dreams. The moral of the story? Apparently those who scored a Wii in Gamestop’s Wii Raincheck offer weren’t so foolish for plunking down $250 upfront to receive their console one month later. Just as Alanis Morissette warned us back in the 90’s: you live, you learn. (Read the full post about ‘Wii Raincheck, Shoulda Coulda Woulda [Update]’…)

Over 1 Billion Cell Phones Sold in 2007

Written by admin on Sunday, January 27th, 2008 in devices and gadgets.

According to Wikipedia’s entry on world population, there are about 6.6 billion people on Earth. According to market research firm, Strategy Analytics, 1.1 billion cell phones were sold in 2007. That means, that assuming that no one had a mobile before, 1/6 of the people in the world would now have one. Of course, that’s not the case, and it’s pretty easy to assume that well over that number currently have cell phones. Pretty amazing. It wasn’t that long ago (early 90s) that cell phones were these heavy brick-sized devices that sat in your car and were hardly portable.

Amazon MP3 Service Going Global; Epic iTunes Battle on the Horizon [Announcements]
Amazon’s digital music catalogue is all set to go global, and although a launch date has not yet been settled, it shall hit sometime this year. Given Amazon MP3 offers DRM-free tracks, which are generally cheaper than iTunes limited, equivalent offerings, we cannot help but think an epic battle between the big As is all set to take off. Amazon MP3 has the only digital music catalogue that offers DRM-free tunes from all four major labels, with around 3.3 million tracks in the library, they are packing some weight. If that fact doesn’t have Apple quaking in their boots, the competitive pricing should. We couldn’t care less how Amazon and Apple get down and dirty, but as they are bound to be set for a fight, teeth gnashing and all, it can only mean good things for customers. Via’s upcoming Isaiah chip can run Crysis
Posted Jan 27th 2008 4:27AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Gaming, Handhelds, Laptops Sure, you might’ve napped through the marketing speak and blearily paged through the tech documentation, but apparently you haven’t heard all there is to know about the new Isaiah architecture from Via. The folks at [H] Enthusiast got to see the chip in action, and were most impressed by the 1.8GHz bugger’s ability to run Crysis. Apparently the folks at Via are fairly certain their chip can best the upcoming UMPC-friendly Silverthorn chips from Intel, and it seems like Crysis is about as good a benchmark as any. We’re sure to hear more about this little rivalry in the coming months, but we like the way things are headed. (Read the full post about ‘Via’s upcoming Isaiah chip can run Crysis’…)
