Rumor Update: Sony Killing Off 80GB PS3? [Rumor]

Rumor Update: <em/>Sony Killing Off 80GB PS3? [Rumor]” src=”/wp-content/thumbs/rumor-update-sony-killing-off-80gb-ps3-rumor.jpg” style=”padding: 7px; float: left;” /><br />
Yesterday, word was that Best Buy is days away from dropkicking the 80GB PS3 off its shelves. Today, the PS380 jumps from the “threatened” to the “endangered” list—Game Daily Biz says another major retailer confirms something is indeed “afoot” with 80GB supplies. And an analyst translates “afoot” to mean “impending doom.” But, there’s a kink in this kerfluffle. The probably overpaid Janco Partners analyst thinks Sony is putting the plastic bag over the 80GB PS3’s head “because it has failed to meet internal sales projections.” Fair reasoning, except that the 80-gig model outsold the cheaper 40-gig version last quarter according to the NPD. Shocker, right? It surprised me, GDB and Sony, apparently. <a href=Share This

Sony announces new Blu-ray module, should drive down costs
Posted Jan 25th 2008 12:05PM by Evan BlassFiled under: HDTV, Laptops, Peripherals, Portable VideoSony has announced the development of a new Blu-ray reader / writer module that is not only smaller than previous components, but promises to be cheaper as well due to a simplified manufacturing process. The new laser housing is less than three millimeters thick, according to the Japanese manufacturer and co-developer Nichia Corporation, enabling it to be incorporated into smaller devices such as portable players. OLPC Woes Never End: Shoddy Recordkeeping Delaying Shipments [Better Late Than?]
OLPC was supposed to be a beacon of hope and gleaming digital light for children all around the developing world. Lately, it’s been more like a dirty, busted street lamp. Now it’s coming out that they can’t even get laptops to the people actually paying for them—particularly if they used PayPal—due to crappy record-keeping software that keeps dumping people’s addresses. And that’s on top of the supply problems. So, even if they miraculously have one to send to you, it’s late ’cause they don’t know where to send it. It’s telling that while they tout that 80,000 people donated to Give One, Get One, OLPC won’t say how many people have actually gotten them yet. Walking Chair tests your dedication to laziness, extravagance
Posted Jan 25th 2008 9:34AM by Evan BlassFiled under: Household, RobotsAnyone can go into Office Depot and pick up a rolling desk seat for fifty bucks, but it takes a truly lazy individual to shell out almost $22,000 for a chair that very slowly “walks” you into proper working position. Actually, we doubt that the commercially-available Walking Chair from Vienna-based design studio Walking Things is really built for sitting; it’s more likely meant as a showpiece for the ridiculous amount of disposable income you’re pulling in. Infrared-Beaming Helmet May Battle Alzheimer’s [Medical]

Infrared-Beaming Helmet May Battle Alzheimer’s [Medical]
Despite looking like a freaky PC case-mod for your head, researchers say this helmet may serve as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. It directs low levels of infrared light at the skulls of Alzheimer’s sufferers in order to combat the disease by stimulating brain cell growth. A medical team from Sunderland and Durham Universities in the UK believe this could help combat the disease, having already tested the idea on mice. In that test, the mice gained better learning ability afterwards. A human test will go ahead in the summer. Current therapy for Alzheimer’s sufferers doesn’t correct for cell-loss, which is why this technology may be promising. Slingbox SOLO gets reviewed

Slingbox SOLO gets reviewed
Posted Jan 25th 2008 12:35PM by Richard LawlerFiled under: HDTV, Home EntertainmentFirst spotted in FCC pics back in August, the Slingbox SOLO has finally hit the review circuit. Lacking the hardware-assisted HD streaming output of the just announced Slingbox PRO HD, the SOLO brings the original Slingbox Pro’s HD inputs and VGA-res output to a dongle-less existence. The people at PC Magazine hooked up up the ‘box and found plenty to admire in Sling’s software and easy setup, pausing only to lament the short included ethernet cable and lack of WiFi. CES 2008: Professional Rock Band Drums

CES 2008: Professional Rock Band Drums
One of the highlights of the Ion Audio booth at this year’s CES was the Rock Band video game. Now, Guitar Hero and Rock Band were probably featured in about 50 booths this year—many companies faced the fact that a video game was far more exciting than their own products—but Ion had a unique take on it. Ion made a professional drum kit for use with Rock Band. This kit not only has higher quality drums than the ones that come with the game, it also has separate cymbal pads you can use for authenticity. (The game doesn’t know about the cymbals specifically, but each one is the same “color” as one of the lower drum pads.) Ion makes “real” drum kits—electronic drums that can trigger samples—and here they’ve adapted one of them to play Rock Band. (Read the full post about ‘CES 2008: Professional Rock Band Drums’…)

LivingColors Lamp

LivingColors Lamp
The LivingColors lamp will definitely brighten up your home in ways you never imagined before, bringing the full range of a rainbow into your living room. Perfect for those non-talking moments with your spouse where you want to communicate just exactly how you’re feeling…blue would be a good choice there and then. Unfortunately, the colors in there won’t live forever since the LEDs within are not replaceable so it is pretty ironic to call it LivingColors in the first place.
