Walt Mossberg reviews the Eee PC: Verdict, “cramped, but workable”

As a fan of the Eee PC I have to say that I was a little disappointed to see this review from Walt Mossberg. I tend more often to agree with his reviews, however in this case I cannot fully agree, nor disagree with the comments that he made. While the points that he made are valid, I think the Eee is great for its intended market.
An example is the keyboard is “cramped, but workable.” I cannot disagree, the keyboard seems very small at first, especially when compared to a full size desktop style keyboard and for a while makes typing very difficult, but the Eee is not really a primary use machine and the small form factor is what draws many to purchase one.
Another comment was in regards to the small storage that is available for the user. With just a 4GB flash-based storage option, after the OS is installed the user is left with something like 1.7GB free, which may not seem like that much, until you remember that this is not a primary computing machine. Not to mention you can easily use a USB thumb drive or add an SD card for external storage. I was able to find a 4GB SD card for around $35.
Walt also mentioned that the screen is the biggest problem, a 7-inch display is very small and anything will need a lot of scrolling to be read. This is very accurate, however like most I tend to think of the Eee as a secondary machine and for that 7-inches seems more than alright.
Personally (as an Eee PC owner and user) I have to say that for what it offers, the Eee is a great deal. It makes a great secondary device for around the house use or even an on-the-go machine for when a regular laptop seems large and heavy to lug around.
